Shop Red Mites

Red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) are also known as the red mitepoultry mitered poultry miteroost mite and chicken mite.  They are are blood-feeding ecto-parasites that live in cracks and crevices in your chicken house, coming out at night to feed on your chickens.  They are generally white or greyish in colour, becoming darker or redder when engorged with blood. After feeding, they hide in cracks and crevices away from daylight, where they mate and lay eggs.  Be aware that Red mites can survive for up to 10 months in an empty hen house.

Red mites are called a ‘temporary ecto-parasite’ as they on only feed at night.  Unable to fly, they crawl onto their prey to feed and can pose a very serious problem for poultry keepers during the summer months when they are active. A large infestation of red mites can be extremely serious, as their feeding on your chickens blood supply can cause the hens to be come anemic and consequently even cause death.  Red mites are an avian infestation, as so can be introduced to your brood by wild birds.  Once infected, the mites move quickly between birds and will cause stress and irritation in the individuals.
