Guinea Fowl Keets

This family of insect and seed-eating, ground-nesting birds resemble partridges, but with featherless heads. These birds are terrestrial, and prone to run rather than fly when alarmed. Like most gallinaceous birds, they have a short-lived explosive flight and rely on gliding to cover extended distances.

Baby Guineas, which are known as keets, are very active and easy to raise. After about 4 weeks of age they require very little attention and will take care of themselves by foraging for their food.

Their diet consists of a variety of animal and plant food; seeds, fruits, greens, snails, spiders, worms, all sorts of insects, frogs, lizards, small snakes and small mammals, while on range, By far one of the best foragers around. Guinea fowl are particularly well-suited to consuming massive quantities of ticks, which might otherwise spread Lyme disease. They can also eat chicken layer crumbles while housed in a coop.

Guinea fowl are very popular for bug control and many people and farmers big or small use them in their gardens. The diet of an adult guinea fowl consists of 90 percent bugs and weed seeds. Un-like chickens that can devour your garden the guineas usually won't. This makes them very useful and extremely easy to raise.

Be cautious buying guineas that are grown or over 12 - 14 weeks old if you are buying them to roam your property. These guineas may not stay on your property and possibly fly away to look for home.  It is very important to raise guineas at your property. Even keeping them in pen for months before letting them out, they will still leave if bought to old.

When alarmed can be very loud.
